What are the common indications that a tree is dying?

Healthy trees provide important environmental benefits. But just like any living organism, trees can become sick or begin to die due to disease, pests, environmental stress, or old age. It’s important to recognize the warning signs so you can safely remove it before it becomes a major hazard. At J P Tree Services, we provide expert tree removal in the greater Dallas area. Here are four signs that a tree on your property may be dying. Sparse or Discolored Leaves Leaves are a good indicator of a tree’s overall health. If a tree that usually produces full, vibrant foliage starts showing sparse growth or leaves that are discolored, wilted, or undersized, this could signal that something is wrong. Yellowing, browning, or curling leaves can point to disease, root damage, or a lack of nutrients. If this issue persists from one growing season to the next, the tree may be dying from the inside out. Bark Falling Off or Cracking Healthy bark helps protect a tree from pests, disease, and harsh weather. When bark begins to fall off in large patches or cracks deeply along the trunk, it’s a red flag. Peeling or missing bark often reveals dead or decaying wood underneath. Cracks in the trunk can weaken the structure of the tree and may indicate internal decay. These issues can make the tree more vulnerable to falling during high winds or storms. Fungal Growth Around the Base The presence of fungus at the base of a tree is often a sign of internal rot. While not all fungi are harmful, certain types indicate that the roots or lower trunk may be decaying. If you see fungi growing regularly around your tree’s root flare or lower trunk, it’s wise to have the tree evaluated. Root rot weakens a tree’s ability to stand tall and may lead to sudden collapse. No New Growth A healthy tree will show signs of new growth each year, whether that’s budding leaves, fresh shoots, or expanding limbs. If a tree stops producing new growth and appears stagnant while others around it thrive, it’s likely in decline. Lack of vitality over multiple seasons is often a sign that the tree is nearing the end of its life and should be assessed by an arborist.
